What is Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO?

APERTURE

Below, you can see the difference between two photos. One taken with an F16 aperture, while the other taken with an F2.8 aperture.

Aperture is usually visualized at a human eye. Our cornea being like the front element of a lens, and aperture controlling how much light is let in, just like our iris in our eyes.
The smaller the aperture the less light enters the camera, the larger the aperture, the more light enters the camera.
Aperture effects depth of field by changing what the focus in the picture is by lessening or adding F stops.

SHUTTER SPEED

This is a photo with a high shutter speed.

This is a photo with a slow shutter speed.

a1) During the day I would've used a high shutter speed so the photo would come out clearly. There would already be enough light from the sun so you wouldn't need more time for the lens to gather light for the photograph.
a2) During the night when it is dark I would probably change to a slower shutter speed because you wouldn't be able to get a very clear photo with a high shutter speed because it would be too dark.

b1) I would again use a high shutter speed, because the movements would be really blurry with a slow shutter speed.
b2) I would use high shutter speed again, but with flash because it would be really blurry and still dark with slow shutter speed.

c1) I would use a high shutter speed to capture all the precise actions and expressions.
c2) I would still use a high shutter speed because we are inside the gym where there is light, and you want to see all the choreography clearly.

d1)  To see the kids dancing clearly, I would use a high shutter speed because it is bright outside and it would be really washed out if more light was added to the photo.
d2) I would again use a high shutter speed, but with a flash. If you used a slow shutter speed it would look like a big blurry mess of movement.

e1) I think it would actually really look cool if you used slow shutter speed, even in the light, for this photo. Because you don't necessarily want to capture every single persons face, but the action of fleeing into the doors.
e2) I would again use the slow shutter speed, so it would capture more light along with the movement.

f1) To capture the ball in mid air during the day with light, I would use a high shutter speed.
f2) To capture the line of the ball going into the hoop, I would use slow shutter speed, also so the photo would not be too dark.

1. You can put the camera on manual mode and it will set the aperture and shutter speed for you.
2. You can put the camera on the Shutter Priority mode and it will set the aperture for you, but you do the adjusting of the shutter speed.
3.When you put the camera in Aperture Priority mode, it will automatically set the shutter speed for you, but you control the aperture.

ISO

ISO 200 vs ISO 3200

1. The advantages of taking a photo at a higher ISO, is that the movement and actions of the players will be clear and in focus.
2. The suggestion the author made about a low ISO, is that you should always use the lowest ISO possible to get the highest quality photo.
3. The suggestion the author made about a high ISO is that to only use it when it is too dark to use the lowest one. Like nighttime.

Aperture settings: F2.8- F22
Shutter Speed settings: 1 sec-1/4000 sec
ISO Settings: 100- 25600
